Making it happen

Four steps to your object.

  1. Tell us about your idea.

What is the object for? Approximate dimensions, the quantity you need and your ideas give us a starting point.

  2. We explore the possibilities.

We agree on the shape, material and colour with you. You then receive a quote setting out the agreed details.

  3. You give the go-ahead.

You review the quote and decide. Production begins after your approval and confirmation that full payment has been received.

  4. Your idea takes shape.

We make the agreed object and check it before shipping. Delivery time and shipping are agreed in the quote.

Materials · Chosen with care

The right shape
starts with the material.

Decorative, practical or made for the outdoors: every material has its strengths. Discover what suits your idea.

01 / Models & decoration

PLA

Polylactic acid

For fine details and beautiful shapes. A good choice for decorative pieces, models and early visual prototypes.

Character
Rigid & detailed
Heat resistance
Low
Where to use it
Mainly indoors
Technical details

Typical applications

Decorative objects, architectural models, figurines and visual prototypes.

Mechanical properties
Rigid with little flexibility; tends to be brittle under impact.
Details & surface
Good detail reproduction for small contours and surface designs.
Heat
Softens sooner than the other three materials. Not a first choice for heat or a hot car.
UV & weather
Low UV resistance; less suitable for permanent outdoor applications.
Post-processing
Can be wet-sanded. Avoid friction heat when working on the part.
During printing
Little warping, making it well suited to dimensionally accurate visual models.

Good to knowPlant-based raw materials do not automatically make a printed PLA part biodegradable in the garden or in home compost.

02 / Everyday & functional parts

PETG

Glycol-modified PET

Tough with a little give. A versatile choice for brackets and functional parts that need to stand up to everyday use.

Character
Tough & slightly flexible
Heat resistance
Higher than PLA
Where to use it
Indoors & many outdoor applications
Technical details

Typical applications

Brackets, clips, covers and practical functional parts.

Mechanical properties
Tough and somewhat flexible, with good adhesion between printed layers.
Water & moisture
A water- and moisture-resistant material. This does not guarantee that the printed part is watertight.
Heat
More heat-resistant than PLA; specific operating temperatures depend on the filament type and the load.
UV & weather
Suitable for many outdoor applications. ASA is often a better choice for prolonged exposure to intense sunlight.
Surface
Typically glossy. Very fine details and large overhangs are harder to achieve than with PLA.
Post-processing
Can be wet- or dry-sanded.

Good to knowPETG is not automatically food-safe: filament additives, production and cleaning of the printed part must suit the intended use.

03 / Outdoors & weather

ASA

Acrylonitrile styrene acrylate

Robust in sunlight and weather. Particularly useful for enclosures and parts intended for permanent outdoor use.

Character
Robust & impact-resistant
Heat resistance
High by comparison
Where to use it
Outdoors & UV exposure
Technical details

Typical applications

Outdoor enclosures, covers and brackets exposed to the weather.

Mechanical properties
Tough, impact-resistant and wear-resistant for robust functional parts.
UV & weather
Very good UV and weather resistance; this is a key advantage over ABS.
Heat
More heat-resistant than standard PLA and PETG. The actual load a part can withstand still depends on the part itself.
Surface
Good detail reproduction; the surface can be post-processed.
Post-processing
Can be sanded, bonded and smoothed using suitable professional methods.
During printing
Can warp considerably. Controlled production is important for correct dimensions and layer adhesion.

Good to knowSmoothing can remove fine details and sharp edges. We therefore agree on the desired surface finish in advance.

04 / Technical parts & enclosures

ABS

Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene

Tough and easy to post-process. For technical prototypes and robust enclosures mainly intended for indoor use.

Character
Tough & mechanically resilient
Heat resistance
High by comparison
Where to use it
Technical indoor parts
Technical details

Typical applications

Device enclosures, technical prototypes and indoor parts subject to mechanical stress.

Mechanical properties
Tough and mechanically resilient for robust functional parts.
Heat
Good heat resistance compared with PLA and PETG; depends on the material grade and the load on the part.
UV & weather
Low UV resistance. Sunlight can cause yellowing and brittleness; consider ASA for outdoor use.
Post-processing
Easy to sand, bond and smooth using suitable professional methods.
During printing
Prone to warping and requires controlled production conditions.

Good to knowABS can shrink as it cools. Production must account for this where precise fits are critical.

Behind LayerLabs 3D

Two minds.
Many possibilities.

Nils & Moritz

We are the minds behind LayerLabs 3D. We are interested in turning an idea into something tangible: a useful detail, a distinctive shape or an object that finds its place in everyday life.

Our approach is personal and considered. For custom projects, we discuss the possibilities with you before the first layer is printed.

Have another question?

Good to know.

Get help
Shop or custom enquiry?
Our shop lists our objects, the available options and all ordering details. If you are looking for your own shape or a different version, send us an enquiry.
Do I need a finished 3D file?
A description is enough for your first enquiry. Let us know if you already have a sketch or a 3D file. We will then work out which files or other information your project needs.
Can I choose the colour and material?
The available options are listed with each object in the shop. For custom projects, we agree on the colour and material in the quote. The examples on this page show some possibilities.
What happens after I send an enquiry?
We get back to you about your project and discuss the remaining details. An enquiry is not an order. You decide once you have received the agreed quote.

Layer by layer. With you.

The next step
is yours.
